Grunburg
Until the runaway growth experienced by Alexander made
it the largest city in Asterland, Grunburg held that honor. It is a
city of ancient tradition, the traditional home of the humans in this
part of the world. It was here that humans and elves learned to live
side-by-side in relative harmony.
Grunburg is now one of the more enlightened cities in
all of Asterland. Here, members of all of the civilized races (and
some of the more dubious ones) can freely roam the streets in relative
safety. The age of the city may account for the sharp division of the "haves" and "have-nots." The
big money in the city is for the most part owned by third or fourth
generation capital. Wealthy merchants afford the better districts of
the cities, gated communities where none are allowed unless they can
prove they live there, or have a special guest pass from someone that
does live there. Thus, theft is kept to a minimum and crime in these
sectors is rare when not in the form of domestic violence of some sort.
There are no real slums per se in the city. Homeless
are considerately escorted to poor houses located in the forest countryside
surrounding the city if they are unable to work. Homeless that are
physically able to do labor have the choice of being forcibly thrown
out of the city or working in the iron mines in the nearby mountains
for their support. Of course, there are some loopholes that allow riff-raff
to roam the streets. One can join a thieves guild to gain a certifiable
place of residence or one can choose from the fair number of boarding
houses for the poor and working-class. These establishments pack in
unthinkable numbers of patrons each night for a few copper pieces per
night, which one can easily beg in a day.
Politics in the city are another place where wealth
can buy whatever influence is desired. Many of the officials are easily
bribed if the price is right. Many factions vie for control of the
city. The political parties are the Randere, comprised mostly of merchants,
the Tilrandil, who side with the common worker, and the Freedom Society, which needs explaination all itself.
