Trondheim,
located 40 miles to the east of Geyon, is the magimotive manufacturing
center where most magimotive carts are built. It is one factory after the
other, but all are located on the east (downwind) side of town, having
learned from the horrible smog of Geyon. High
society is relatively new here, and mostly undeveloped. Most see this
as a good thing.
The town only a few years ago was nothing but desert
scrub until the industrious Glenn Firebrand bought up the valley for
the sum of 1,000 gold pieces. Most thought him a fool to even be interested
in lands so near to the goblin and ogre infested mountains. Unknown to
them, this was part of his plan. In adventuring in the region, he had
befriended the ogres and goblins, seeing beyond the stereotypes of their
being evil and lazy.
He returned from adventuring in the mountains, having
discovered several artifacts that he sold for a king's ransom. With the
money he hired full-time archemages to build a city the likes of which
Asterland had never seen. A fortress of a city juts out of the desert
landscape. The walls tower high along the rim of the ring of hills that
surrounds the valley. A bit of a plateau along the east side of town
just outside the city wals is the industrial center. The businesses that
manufacture things must do so outside the city walls to maintain the
city as pleasant as possible for the inhabitants. The city is one of
splendor, matching even Brin in its beauty as one towering building after
another is raised from the ground almost by the day.
The thing that makes the city so unusual is that among
all this splendor live its residents, mostly goblins and ogres. It is
almost as if Glenn saw more in them than they themselves could imagine,
and gave them something to aspire to. They are the workers in his factories,
and so far they have performed fantastically. When removed from the squabblings
fo their own society, they have been trained to work well and efficiently.
The workers are treated fairly and only dismissed when they continue
to be beligerant and offensive. They are paid well compared to what they
were used to eeking out in the mountains and raiding poor farming villiages,
but they are content with far less than Glenn would have to pay humans
or elves to do comperable work. Part of the pay they see as being able
to live in Trondheim, where they are given a nice place to stay as part
of their pay. There is little danger here from the warring tribes that
used to be the peril of their peoples. Each member of the city is also
a member of the People's Militia, an army of part time military personnel
that guard the city in times of trouble. This also saves Glenn a lot
of money, not having to employ many guards besides the ones that train
the militia.
Trondheim may be a very civilized city, but on the weekend
it turns into a complete madhouse. The weekends last from Friday to Sunday.
Workdays are twelve hours long, which does not begin to tax the energies
of goblins or ogres, and the weekends are long and drunken. The town
erupts into a weekly festival of excess. The workers live for the weekend,
often spending most of their pay from the week in the taverns, gambling
halls, and brothels that are throughout the city.
