| A log of illegal actions and improprieties falls into
the hands of an inquisitor named Futrass Cohen, one of the Inquisitors'
more trusted agents. He comes to know the truth of the nature of the organization,
with its greed and hidden agendas. His first reaction is to want to hide
the book from others that might lose their faith. He retreats into the
sewers and underground tunnels beneath Grunburg to be with his thoughts,
taking the book with him.
The High Guard, the leaders of the inquisitors, offer
to hire adventurers to kill him for the sum of 1,000 gold per person
that returns, no reward to be granted to surviving family (in other words,
if you die, your family gets nothing). They expect that there will probably
be several parties of adventurers die before one might get lucky. The
inquisitors are well known for their ability in combat and are feared
by all for their legendary combat skills. The party will be made up mostly
of non-inquisitor, non-locals, who do not know of their reputation. The
High Guard does not want to risk sending inquisitors after him, as the
knowledge that he posesses in the book could convince others to do the
same. Their improprieties are unknown to the inquisitors, much less to
the public as a whole. The city of Grunburg pays them extremely well
for their services, something they do not want to come to an end. Also,
the followers of The Way is the only organization besides itself to whom
the Freedom Society will give aid to in the form of magical endowments
of the type that could be called "powers."
