Description

Baron Mai'tran Kaipher, or simply "the baron" as he prefers to be called, stands 6'11" tall, is of medium build, and very charming. He is quite friendly, though his smile shows just too many teeth as it were. He speaks with a high society tone, confidence in his voice.

He is outgoing and always smiling as if he were thinking of a joke that only he were privy to. He moves with a sophisticated grace and everything about him says style. He always wears a pair of solglasses of a blue tint. The frames are the finest gold, squared ovals in shape. If it were not for his long nose, he might almost be called handsome, but what he lacks in looks he makes up for in sheer charisma. He is good with a business deal, and one feels that he is one that keeps his word.

Story

The baron loves to engage in light conversation about things of the world, especially if the conversation can be turned to his business, Callistro Magimotive, maker of the Callistro Fireball, one of the fastest motocarts going, and of the Personna, his new motocart built with cheap labor of goblins, with ice trolls to do the heavy lifting. Indeed, his is a new style of management, of breaking the rules in almost everything. He has created an uneasy peace between himself and his workers. The Ice Trolls and goblins of the industrial complex at Kievla, nestled against the mountains to the east of Geyon, grow impatient with the lack of leadership of the Broken Arm League. With the promise of steady pay and good benefits, the creatures begin the slow integration into society. Perhaps they will never be able to roam the streets of Asterland, but these ARE strange times indeed.

The Trolls and Goblins are welcomed into Kievla with uneasiness, but apart from drink-induced fights, they have gone out of their way to fit in. One might say that they were becoming soft in their new life, what with a room without leaks and drafts, and good hard work to keep them fit, they look to the future with more certainty than the tribal wars of the Broken Arm League ever offered them. For the baron's part, they work for half what their human counterparts demand, so everyone wins. No other employers have risked taking gobbos or trolls on as employees yet. It seems that they are waiting to see if the baron can pull it off or not.

The baron seems to be doing just that. Hiring leaders from among the workers as his formen and training them in the ways of production, there is a sort of win-win atmosphere that has analysts rethinking the way that they deal with employees. The lack of tyranny of many factory owners has the locals almost jealous. Already many in the area complain that the baron should hire humans and elves who need jobs and let the trolls and gobbos go back to the mountains where they came from. Racial hatred is kept at bay mostly due to the fact that the minorities in this case have a habit of tearing arms off when provoked. At best, it is a warm standoff.

Baron Kaipher's ultimate goal is to dominate the transportation segment of the magitech industry. He sees it as the one area that will grow faster than any other, and aside from the production and sale of focal amulets, he is not at all far from the truth. His cheap line of cars lures in the common man. At the official release of the vehicles, they are to roll out for a mere 3,000 gold, about half what a cheap motocart goes for in any other brand.

To capture the high end of the travel market, the baron invented the landship. The first one, the landship Katrina, made her maiden voyage recently. This was shrouded in secrecy, mostly due to his plans for her. He sold the Katrina to Dumas Fredrik, a well-connected man of Grunburg with ties to old money and new industry, a member of the Grunburg city council. Dumas is one of questionable judgement, which is usually more than made up for by his daughter Gina, an adventuress weaponmaster. The baron instructed Dumas to invite the leaders of magitech that would come for the maiden voyage. They were not to tell anyone supposedly so that the press would not catch wind of the wonderful machine before the official release of the product. His real intent was to kill those that he saw as threats to his future revenue where possible, and to steal their technology when not. This is what happened. For the full story, click here.

Much of his dirty work is done by a mage, one Perell. Perell can open portals to other places and do limited mind control. He is not one to mess with, a wizard of the 10th circle.
Baron's pesky familiar is named Tim, though he will attempt to disguise his true name to any that ask. He is easily duped into telling one what they want to know. He will resist questioning under force, but spills his guts piece by piece when tricked. He is particularly whiny and snivels when things don't go his way. He is not evil by nature, and is, in fact, quite friendly to those that he sees as his friends. He is a foot and a half tall and quite quick for his size.
