Mudman
Ecology
of the Mudman Mudmen are odd relatives of the Earth Elemental. They
were originally created to guard treasure in muddy subterrainean areas.
They are self multiplying, reproducing asexually at the rate of 1-4/year.
There exist a variant of the mudman, the lava beast, which is exactly
the same, except for being made of molten rock, which can be thrown
for 2d6, which tends to live in volcanically active areas and is impervious
to heat attacks. The mudman prefers to live alone in cave or dungeon
settings.
They are
very ill tempered, and will attack any creature on sight. They often
live with others of their kind, hunting in packs. They have no need
for food, deriving nourishment from the soil and rock around them.
They are particularly fond of uranium in its natural state as well
as magnetite, a naturally occuring form of magnetic iron. If in an
area where this is available, the creature will devour it unceasingly.
This leads to a rather odd defense that the creature possesses. When
attacked with a metal weapon, the attacker must roll his/her strength
or lose grip of the weapon that they are attacking with, which adheres
to the Mudman. The mudman is brown in color with mottled patches of
black and grey. It often incorporates stones in its makeup, making
it tougher and accounting for its high armor class and hit dice. It
stands 8' tall at maturity.
It attacks
twice/round for 2-12 damage/attack. It has a rather slow movement base
(8"). The monster will usually be guarding a treasure of some kind,
though if the treasure is stolen, or if it is an offspring of a created
mudman (no assignment given it by its creator), it is free to wander
around spreading chaos. They sometimes attack small villages, driven
by the hate that they have for all living.
The physical
appearance of the mudman is a humanoid shaped mound of filth with one
large eye where its face would be. It smells of damp earth. It stands
hunched over. It can speak dwarven and often goblin and Troll if in
a dungeon setting. It will have no treasure of its own besides the
occasional metal weapon magnetically adhered to its body. It cannot
be reasoned with and has low intellegence. It cannot be bribed, charmed,
or held.
